Many people assume that when they enter the world of modeling that their agency will have their back. Though this is the way that it’s supposed to work, it doesn’t always quite work out that way. You may have a clash of personalities or you may see things differently in the way that you’d like to get things done. Whatever the reason, there are times when almost every model feels unhappy with her agency. This isn’t necessarily a good situation because it means that something bad may have happened. It also means that there is a necessity to put out feelers and find an agency that is more in line with what you feel and are looking for.

So what are you supposed to do if you happen to be unhappy with your modeling agency? The problem is that the modeling world is a very tight knit community. So if you wish to jump ship on an agency then you want to be careful not to let the word get out prematurely. Don’t tell too many people and be very careful that when you are talking to a new prospective agency, that you are dealing with a resource for which you can wholeheartedly trust. Any breach of trust may result not only in you not getting picked up by another agency, but also by you getting dropped by your current agency as well.

If you decide that you are truly unhappy with your modeling agency, be sure that it’s a legitimate reason. Did you have one isolated disagreement with one of your reps? On the other end of the spectrum, did you find out that something unethical was going on? The key to ensuring that you are justified in leaving your modeling agency is to determine the reasoning. If the rationale is related to something trivial or short lived, then you may want to reconsider. If however there is a deeper reason, then by all means do what you need to do as your representation is one of the most important aspects of modeling.

It is important to weigh out the benefits of a new agency versus what you are getting from your current agency. Are you willing to overlook the flaws with your current agency based on what you get out of them? If they are the best agency in town, then do you really want to leave over a difficult personality? It’s important to remember that within the world of modeling, the agency that represents you is a big part of your success. You always want to be sure that you’re happy, but if you decide that it’s time to switch then you do need to weigh out the benefits versus the downside of leaving. Think it through and ultimately be sure that you are with an agency that makes you happy and has your best interests at heart.
