I have always carried a bag of some designer "ilk". Coach, Dooney and Bourke, Cole Haan, etc. did it for me. Several years ago, I wandered into the world of Chanel and Louis Vuitton and then, Hermes. I actually consider other's feelings when I select a handbag to use. Will a Chanel make a friend uncomfortable? Will a LV shout "look what I can afford?" Most of my bags are very classic and quiet in their style. If I feel like I might hurt someone's feelings with a very recognizable handbag, I'll go with something less obvious. If I'm buying something that costs thousands of dollars, then I want it to last. I want the manufacturer to stand behind their product; and I want it to be timeless and beautiful for ages to come.

Handbags serve a practical function of carrying my stuff. But they are also an opportunity to express my aesthetics while carrying stuff. Handbags always "fit" even when I gain or lose too much weight to dress as I'd prefer, and if it is well-made, it will last forever.
