Creating an Effective Modeling Portfolio
Posted by Alex Dakov (Jan 23, 2010)

There are many things that you need to be successful in modeling. You need to have the right look, the right attitude, the right representation, and of course the best possible portfolio. Your portfolio is like your resume or calling card within the modeling world. This is what you use to represent yourself to potential clients and what you use to get your foot in the door. This represents who you are as a model and as an individual. A well done portfolio can make the difference between getting the calls for an audition and being put at the bottom of the pile. Never underestimate its importance because it is what will help to set you apart from the rest in the minds of those that may wish to work with you and ultimately hire you. So what should you keep in mind as you work to develop your modeling portfolio?
Work with Your Representative to Create the Right Portfolio
There's a reason why you have selected the agent or representative that you have, they hopefully possess the expertise and the know how to get you headed in the right direction. If in fact they do, then they should be focused in on what it takes to create the best portfolio possible. This is a time where you should rely on their expertise to help you develop the look that is right for you. Be sure that you incorporate your own thinking as well so that you end up with a final product that you are happy with and can stand behind. This is what will represent your first impression in many cases, so be sure that it's done right.
Include Several Different Looks
You want to be sure that your portfolio includes several different looks that represent you. If you have all the same type of shots or types of modeling, you are going to be typecast as a very single dimension model. Let your looks take stage and showcase yourself in several different ways, because you want to demonstrate versatility. The more diverse and in depth you can show yourself as a model, the more opportunities that will open up for you. Demonstrate just how much you are capable of!
By All Means Be Sure That It's Professionally Done
Nothing is worse than a portfolio that looks cheap, so don't fall into this trap. Can entering the world of modeling be expensive at times? Sure it can, but spending a bit of money is the only way to ensure that you will get the modeling jobs as you move forward. Consider this to be an investment in yourself and in your future career so that you can justify the expense. If you don't spend a little on a professionally created portfolio, then it will most certainly be a poor representation of you. Sometimes you have to spend a little to make a little—and this is a perfect example of that!
