Finding the right modeling agency can be the most important decision of a model's career. This vital decision can make or break a career. Modeling agencies have a large number of contacts in the fashion world that could mean the difference between getting your big break and never making it.

It's important to know what you're looking for. If you would like to work mostly in advertising and events then you should look for a reputable talent agency. These agencies are always on the lookout for fresh faces, making them easier to sign with as a newcomer. If you want to be a model/actor, are a plus sized model, have a child model, or a very unique look you would do best signing with a specialization agency. These agencies tend to cater to a very small niche of the modeling community. If you are looking for a more traditional career as a fashion model then a modeling agency is the place for you. These high powered agencies have many connections in the fashion world, and can be your launch pad to success.

While visiting a modeling agency that you're considering signing with there are a few important things to pay attention to. Most importantly, how are you treated in the interview? If your interviewer treats you more like an object than a human being, run! The way you are treated in the interview process strongly indicates how you will be treated should you choose to sign with this agency. Have a look at the agency's portfolio. The agency you sign with should have an extensive portfolio of work they've found for models in the past. Make sure the portfolio includes several magazine covers and spreads. Make sure to ask a lot of questions while being interviewed and pay close attention to how these questions are answered. It's not a good sign if your interviewer is evasive or supplying half answers.

Don't make any hasty decisions, sit down after your interview and consider how you were treated and how your questions were answered. Look over the company's website and scour the web to see if there are any reviews by models who have previously worked with this agency. Above all else, don't sign anything until you are sure.
