How to Perfect Your Runway Walk

For young models with big aspirations, the runway is one of the most important aspects of modeling. Unfortunately, many girls also find Runway incredibly difficult and struggle to achieve a good stride that wows spectators and designers. Maybe it’s the heels or maybe it’s the pressure, but one thing’s for sure, every model will have to master the runway if they hope to book internationally with top designers.

Here are just a few pointers to change your runway walk from average to amazing.

Fix your posture. Sounds basic but it really will help you walk with confidence. Keep your head up, shoulders back and jut your pelvis forward slightly. Remember, people want to see the complete outfit and your face so don’t look at your feet and focus on a spot in the distance to keep your eyes at the right level.

Be sure to understand the look that the designer is trying to encapsulate. Not all designers want cool, distant expressions. If the line is quirky and fun, keep your facial expression quirky and fun...smile! If the line is sleek and sophisticated, emulate that sophistication.

Be aware of your stride. Too short and it’ll look like you’re taking baby steps. Too long and you run the risk of looking ungainly. Try to place one foot directly in front of the other which will give that enviable hip-sway.

Practice! Especially wearing heels. Learn to walk strong, even with 5 inchers on your feet to avoid re-enacting Naomi’s famous tumble on a Vivienne Westwood runway. If the worst should happen and you fall over, or even off the runway, regain your composure and continue. Seriously, it has happened to even the most experienced of models.

Lastly, remember that every runway walk is a valuable experience to add to your modeling career. Have fun with it!
