You may have felt like you just fell off the turnip truck. Did you have that feeling when you stepped foot into your first big meeting or into the big city for the first time? Even the most cultured or hard core city dwellers may feel like they are out of place when it comes to jump starting their modeling career. It can leave even the most grounded person feeling overwhelmed and almost star struck. So what’s an up and coming model to do when it comes down to learning the basics of the industry? Is there a way to catch onto what you need to know without looking like a fish out of water?

When it comes to learning the basics of the industry, you want to keep a few things in mind. Here are some excellent and rather noninvasive ways to pick up the tricks of the trade and ensure that you are not that stereotypical model that others may make fun of:

1. Find a trusted resource and stick to them like glue: Don’t confuse this with being dependent, but you do want to really absorb whatever you can from them. This may be another model that’s been in the industry for awhile or it may even be an authority within hair and makeup. It matters not what they do, but really what sort of knowledge that they posses and can pass along to you.

2. Filter out the useless information: As with any other path within your life, you are bound to get a whole lot of useless information. You will get opinions, biased points of view, and information from resources that aren’t really so trustworthy. Get in tune to this and know how to filter out the information that doesn’t make any sense to you.

3. Ask plenty of questions whenever possible: If you are at a shoot and you want to know why something is being done, simply ask. So long as this is done in an appropriate manner, it doesn’t mean that you will come across as rude but rather interested. If you want to see why something is being done or want to learn the “ins and outs” of a photo shoot or runway show, then simply ask.

4. Keep informed on your own: Read the magazines, get connected through the right groups, and be sure that you have the right representation. These are all great ways to keep informed and that’s fundamentally important when it comes to learning the basics of the industry. It’s up to you how much you learn or what resources you utilize, so keep on the path to get the information that you want and deserve.

Learning the basics of the industry is a crucial part of being a successful model. Though it does require some hard work and some getting used to at first, you will find that any information that you gain will help you to be in control of your career. There will always be a learning curve, but it’s one that will pay off well if you keep up with it along the way.
