The world of modeling can be a cold and rough one at times. There is much to gain by becoming a model, but first you have to make it. There is so much competition out there that one may wonder how exactly they are going to stand out from the crowd. Since modeling isn’t just about being another pretty face, it can leave many wondering what it takes to become successful in this field. Many think that it has to do with connections and that’s partially true. Many think that it has to do with luck, and it does take a bit of that. Many think that a good body, a pretty face, and the right look are what will help to catapult you to the top and that’s most certainly part of it. However without proper marketing efforts, you will likely fall short within your career as a model. That’s an area where too few people pay attention to.
So what exactly does this mean? What does it entail to market yourself within modeling? It does have to do with building relationships and having the right connections. Those are valuable and will truly help you to stand out from the crowd. It’s also about being aggressive though and taking your fate into your own hands. If you wait for somebody else to market you or put your trust wholeheartedly into the hands of somebody else, then you are destined to fail. It’s up to you to get your name out there and to keep hammering it home. If you can learn to get aggressive and learn what proper marketing efforts will do for you, then you can go as far as you wish within the wonderful world of modeling.
Being aggressive means getting your pictures and your portfolio into the hands of anybody that will listen. It means being in tune to any sort of opportunity that may come up and then working it to fit yourself into it. Though your agency and your representatives are responsible for these efforts, you need to play an active role in it as well. You need to keep your eyes and ears open to what may lie ahead for you and which opportunities you can get involved in. This means getting involved within the modeling community and knowing the proper ways to get your name out there. This isn’t always easy, does force you to sometimes live outside of your comfort zone, and of course means that you have to take matters into your own hands.
If all if this sounds like something that makes you feel quite uncomfortable, then take the easier road. Get involved with and play an active role of the marketing efforts that your agency uses. Be a decision maker in the process and be part of the effort that works to get the jobs—after all this is your career. This too takes some effort but is a bit less aggressive and often makes for a good starting point for your marketing efforts.
