Successful Ways for a Photographer to Work with Models
Posted by Alexander Evdakov (Feb 1, 2010)

The dream of most professional photographers is to get a long term and lucrative job. As this is often a role for which you are working in spurts, any work is usually welcome work. If you are lucky enough to make it into the big time as so few do, then revel in it. If you are faced with an opportunity that may seem difficult at first, it's best to find a way to embrace it and put your best face forward. One area that a lot of photographers seem to struggle with from time to time is dealing with models. As there can be a somewhat different point of view between the two roles at times, it can be beneficial if you can find a way to make this relationship work. You never know, it could be your next big break!
Treat Each Job as Your Next Possible Big Opportunity
Even if you get stuck taking photographs of children or dog models, find the silver lining in it. It may be a job that you are less than thrilled with, but it could also be an opportunity to prove yourself. Think about it—if you do a great job with even the most seemingly trivial job, this could turn into a great long term opportunity for you. It's just imperative that no matter who the subject matter is or how difficult it may be in that moment, that you find a way to look at it as a possibility of a door opening.
Be Courteous Even If It Kills You
You may have the instinct to tell that pretty little model where to go when she questions you on your very skills. Ignore the impulse because it's only going to hurt you in the long run. You have to learn to grin and bear it because even if it seems like this model is going to drive you to insanity, you don't want to be typecast as difficult to work with. This will only result in lost jobs and a potentially harmful reputation in the long run. Find a way to work with even the most challenging personality and make it work as well as you possibly can. That's how you keep your clientele happy and continue to get work as a photographer!
Go Into Each Shoot With Ideas and Creativity
It shows through when you go into a photo shoot with ideas. If you take the time to study up on your subject matter or the nature of the shoot, that will put the model at ease. Be sure to listen to what she or her reps have to say, but convey any ideas or creativity that you may possess up front. This is a surefire way to show the models that you have their best interest at heart, and that you want to create photos that will be stunning. In the end, that's a true win-win scenario for you and the models - and may often mean future work!

Kurtyy (Photographer) Says: I think this is a great post. Photographers should also remember their goal and objective. Everyone is so well connected so its true that you never know who might give you a big break. I think the end result is just to try and be as professional as possible regardless of your experience and it always usually works out. Posted on Feb 19,2010 @ 5:19 PM EST |
