You may have had fun playing around with hair and makeup when you were a kid. What kid didn’t like to stand in front of the mirror and throw on a bit of makeup here and there? You’ve likely worn your hair a variety of ways and colors through the years, mostly because you were bored or craved change. However we all tend to have our signature look that we like and that we tend to stick with for the long term. When it comes to modeling however, there needs to be an acceptance for the versatility that hair and makeup can bring. There may very well be looks that a model isn’t necessarily comfortable with, or that may take some getting used to. This is part of the job and therefore something that may require some adjusting to for many models.

No Point in Being a Diva
While your first instinct may be to cry when your hair gets cut or when they ask you to dye it a different color, you need to find a way to resist the urge. The reality is that this type of reaction or behavior will not be taken in a very favorable way. This is the type of behavior that will get you cast as a diva, and this can be harmful to your career overall. This is an area of modeling where you have to really trust the professionals. Even if you feel like you’re going to freak out, you have to know that it’s being done for a good reason.

Be Sure to Find a Professional That You Like Working With
Though there will be some jobs where the hair and makeup professionals are supplied for you, sometimes you can have your own. No matter what, you want to find a professional of your own that you enjoy working with. Not only can they help you to get back to “normal” when a shoot is done, but they can help you through any painful adjustments. This is an important relationship to build, so be sure that you think it through and search out the right hair and makeup professionals. These should be a part of your team and should most definitely be a trusted resource.

Know That It’s For a Reason
Even if you are asked to cut your hair really short and dye it green, you have to recognize that it’s for a greater cause. These are usually temporary measures and mean that you have work, and that’s what models are in it for. So though the temporary measures may not always be the most desirable, they can mean that you are really moving up within the modeling world. Try to keep that in mind when you look in the mirror and want to have a meltdown!
